You’ll serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in coding standards, supporting education initiatives and helping organizations strengthen coding quality, compliance, and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced coding professional with deep expertise in auditing, compliance, and consulting, and a strong track record of driving coding accuracy and process improvements.

As a Senior Medical Coding Consultant, you'll:

  • Conduct comprehensive coding audits and compliance reviews across inpatient, outpatient, and specialty services.
  • Identify documentation gaps and recommend improvements aligned with regulatory and payer requirements.

  • Mentor junior coders and support ongoing coding quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support denial analysis, appeals, and revenue recovery efforts related to coding.
  • Interpret and apply CMS regulations, payer policies, and industry coding standards.
  • Assist organizations during audits, transitions, and regulatory reviews.
  • Provide guidance on clinical documentation improvement (CDI) initiatives.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional medical coding experience
  • Active certification such as CPC or CCS (RHIT or RHIA preferred)
  • Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, CMS guidelines, and payer policies
  • Proven experience conducting coding audits and compliance reviews
  • Experience training and mentoring coding staff
  • Prior experience in a consulting or advisory capacity
  • Strong knowledge of HIPAA regulations and healthcare compliance standards
  • Experience working with EHR/EMR systems

Preferred Qualifications

Commitment: This is a 5-week independent contractor position staffed via HireArt. The role is remote and open to U.S.-based candidates, excluding California, Illinois, and Texas. Workers will be able to set their own schedules.

HireArt values diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor visas or employ corp-to-corp
