Job description

HireArt is helping our client find a Driver Airbag & Steering Wheel System Engineer to join its team.

In this role, you’ll own the end-to-end development of the driver airbag and steering wheel system, including design, integration, release, and launch. You’ll be responsible for delivering a complete system-level solution, ensuring all components work together to meet ergonomics, electronics, safety, packaging, and manufacturing requirements.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on systems engineer with strong experience in automotive restraint and steering systems, comfortable driving cross-functional alignment and delivering complex vehicle systems from concept through production.

As a Driver Airbag & Steering Wheel System Engineer, you'll:
  • Lead the integration of the driver airbag, steering wheel, horn, and steering wheel switches, ensuring alignment across packaging, safety, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with Interiors, Steering, Electronics, Safety, and Manufacturing teams to deliver a cohesive system solution.
  • Define and manage interfaces between the airbag module, steering wheel switches, clock spring, and column electronics to ensure robust electrical and mechanical integration.
  • Develop and maintain subsystem technical specifications for all components within the system.
  • Use CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX) to support packaging, integration, and release of components and assemblies.
  • Manage engineering change control, issue tracking, and program execution using Jira or similar tools.
  • Own system-level trade-offs across performance, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability.
  • Lead validation strategy and execution, including DVP&R development, test planning, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Drive issue resolution across design, validation, and manufacturing phases, including supplier escalation when needed.
  • Support production readiness through DFMEA, PFMEA, and launch execution activities.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • 4+ years of experience in automotive restraint systems, with direct ownership of driver airbag and/or steering wheel systems
  • Strong experience with steering wheel integration, airbag modules, and related components (e.g., clock spring, switches, and column interfaces)
  • Working knowledge of electronics integration within steering systems, including switches, harnessing, and signal interfaces
  • Proven experience using CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX) for design, packaging, and release
  • Experience with Jira or similar tools for issue tracking, change management, and program execution
  • Experience working with Tier 1 suppliers (e.g., Autoliv, ZF, Joyson, Toyoda Gosei) and managing technical deliverables
  • Strong understanding of DFMEA, DVP&R, and the full vehicle development lifecycle
  • Experience with GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional programs and drive decisions in ambiguous environments
  • Willingness to travel within the Bay Area

Benefits:
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Employer (HireArt) Subsidized healthcare benefits (eligibility begins on the first of the month following 60 days of service)
  • Flexible Spending Account for healthcare-related costs
  • HireArt covers all costs for short and long-term disability and life insurance
  • 401k package

Commitment: This is a full-time, ongoing contract position staffed via HireArt. It will be onsite and available to candidates who are local to the Foster City, CA area.

HireArt values diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor visas or employ corp-to-corp.
