Job description

HireArt is helping an on-demand, autonomous ride-hailing company hire a Fleet Support Engineer - R&D to support early-stage vehicle development and improve fleet reliability before vehicles reach service operations.

In this role, you’ll work within a dedicated R&D-focused fleet support team, diagnosing complex issues on development vehicles and shifting issue detection earlier in the lifecycle. You will play a critical role in identifying root causes, developing repair procedures, and enabling technicians and downstream teams to support vehicles at scale.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical expert with strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical and electrical systems. You are comfortable working in ambiguous environments, analyzing complex data, and building processes where none yet exist.

As a Fleet Support Engineer - R&D, you'll:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for real-time escalations on R&D fleet vehicle issues.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex issues across mechanical, electrical, and networked vehicle systems.
  • Perform deep root cause analysis through vehicle log review, telemetry data, and hands-on diagnostics.
  • Guide technicians through live troubleshooting and repair procedures in test and development environments.
  • Develop and maintain troubleshooting workflows, repair procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Capture and document issue resolution processes to support broader fleet scalability.
  • Analyze fleet data to identify trends, recurring issues, and opportunities for early intervention.
  • Partner with engineering teams to escalate issues, improve system design, and enhance diagnostic tooling.
  • Implement countermeasures to prevent issues from propagating to production or service fleets.
  • Support hardware bring-up, validation, and rework activities for development vehicles.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of vehicle performance, reliability, and diagnostic processes.
  • Travel occasionally within the U.S. to support testing and operational locations.
  • Support off-hours or weekend operations as needed, with advance notice.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
  • 6+ years of experience in automotive, electric vehicle, aerospace, or advanced vehicle development environments
  • Strong experience troubleshooting both mechanical and electrical vehicle systems
  • Experience with automotive networking and diagnostics (automotive ethernet strongly preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and vehicle instrumentation
  • Strong ability to analyze complex vehicle data and perform root cause analysis
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, electrical diagrams, connector pinouts, and system architectures
  • Experience developing troubleshooting procedures or technical documentation
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to work directly with technicians and engineering teams
  • Self-starter with the ability to operate independently in fast-changing environments

Bonus Qualifications:
  • Experience with electric vehicle systems or autonomous vehicle platforms
  • Background in mechatronics or complex electromechanical systems
  • Experience working with large-scale vehicle telemetry or fleet datasets
  • Experience supporting remote vehicle diagnostics
  • Familiarity with Linux and Python for data analysis or diagnostics workflows
  • Experience with networking concepts such as TCP/IP, automotive ethernet, or socket programming

Benefits:
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Employer (HireArt) subsidized healthcare benefits (eligibility begins on the first of the month following 60 days of service)
  • Flexible Spending Account for healthcare-related costs
  • HireArt covers all costs for short- and long-term disability and life insurance
  • 401k package

Commitment: This is a full-time, ongoing contract position staffed via HireArt. It will be onsite and available to candidates who are local to the Foster City, CA area.

HireArt values diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor visas or employ corp-to-corp.
