Job description

HireArt is helping an on-demand, autonomous ride-hailing company find a Mechanical Design Engineer, Sensor Integration NPI to support design, release, and sustaining work for the company’s custom sensor modules used on its robotaxi platform.

In this role, you’ll own the mechanical elements of the sensor pods—building and maintaining BOMs, updating and improving designs, and supporting both new product introduction (NPI) and sustaining activities. This role involves travel within the Bay Area to support on-site builds and supplier collaboration.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and highly skilled in CAD design (Catia V5/V6 preferred), with experience in automotive-grade electromechanical systems and product launches in high-volume manufacturing environments.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, Sensor Integration NPI, you’ll:
  • Manage existing Bills of Materials (BOMs) and overall design configurations using CAD and PLM tools.
  • Work closely with PLM and manufacturing teams to release design changes and support smooth product rollouts.
  • Review existing product designs and propose hardware and process improvements for manufacturability, quality, and performance.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for issues arising during initial builds or in the field.
  • Design and build visual mockups, proofs of concept, and fixtures to support manufacturing teams.
  • Manage design and development activities across multiple internal and external suppliers to deliver complete electromechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers and quality personnel to ramp production processes and meet build and cost objectives.
  • Maintain BOMs, document and approve build processes, and support quality engineering throughout the supply chain.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years of industry experience (automotive preferred)
  • 3D CAD design experience; Catia V5/V6 preferred (Creo or Siemens NX are comparable)
  • Experience launching products in high-volume manufacturing environments
  • Experience with electronic modules in automotive contexts
  • Proficiency in die-cast, injection-molded, and sheet metal parts
  • Understanding of automotive sensing modalities, electromechanical behaviors, and integration challenges
  • Experience developing products and assemblies from initial concept through production ramp

Bonus Qualifications:
  • General aptitude with machining, 3D printing, hand tools, and electronics
  • Experience managing international supply chains, including onsite workshops and build audits
  • Experience creating 2D mechanical drawings with appropriate GD&T
  • Familiarity with quality engineering principles and inspection processes
  • Experience managing external suppliers (Tier 1s and contract manufacturers)

Benefits:
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Employer (HireArt) subsidized healthcare benefits (Eligibility begins on the first of the month following 60 days of service)
  • Flexible Spending Account for healthcare-related costs
  • HireArt covers all costs for short- and long-term disability and life insurance
  • 401k package

Commitment: This is a full-time, ongoing contract position staffed via HireArt. This role is hybrid, requiring 4 days per week onsite, and it is available to candidates local to the Foster City, CA area.

HireArt values diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor visas or employ corp-to-corp.
