Job description

HireArt is helping an on-demand, autonomous ride-hailing company hire a Data Engineer, AV Safety to develop safety processes and data systems that ensure autonomous vehicles operate safely and comply with all regulations.

In this role, you will build and maintain data infrastructure to surface safety-relevant interactions, assess AV events, and provide data-driven insights to guide autonomy development.

The ideal candidate is an experienced data engineer with expertise in safety-critical systems, large-scale data processing, and statistical analysis. You are detail-oriented, skilled at building scalable data pipelines, and able to interpret vehicle behavior in real-world contexts to support safe and compliant AV operations.

As a Data Engineer, AV Safety, you'll:
  • Build and maintain miners to identify events of interest from fleet and simulation data.
  • Enhance miner performance using statistical and ML techniques to improve signal quality.
  • Develop scalable pipelines and dashboards to track miner accuracy, signal quality, and safety metrics.
  • Analyze data to uncover safety trends, failure modes, and opportunities for improved vehicle behavior.
  • Triage AV events for safety, legal, or regulatory concerns and document findings.
  • Create and maintain triage guidelines for both onshore and offshore teams.
  • Provide data and analysis to support regulatory reporting.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related engineering field (e.g., Transportation, Systems, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical)
  • 6+ years of experience with safety-critical systems in AV, automotive, or transportation industries
  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL
  • Hands-on experience with large datasets and distributed frameworks (e.g., Spark, Databricks)
  • Proven ability to build scalable, maintainable data pipelines
  • Solid background in statistics, probability, and estimation methods
  • Experience designing metrics, running analyses, and delivering actionable insights
  • Strong understanding of AV requirements, road user behavior, traffic regulations, and safety principles
  • Effective communicator across technical and non-technical teams; highly organized with strong attention to detail

Bonus Qualifications
  • PhD in Engineering or a related technical field
  • Experience with AV safety or system behavior triage
  • Background in geospatial data analysis
  • Familiarity with BI tools (e.g., Looker)
  • Knowledge of ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards

Benefits:
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Employer (HireArt) subsidized healthcare benefits (eligibility begins 90 days after start date)
  • Flexible Spending Account for healthcare-related costs
  • HireArt covers all costs for short- and long-term disability and life insurance
  • 401k package

Commitment: This is a full-time, ongoing contract position staffed via HireArt. It will be onsite and available to candidates who are local to the Foster City, CA area.

HireArt values diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor visas or employ corp-to-corp.
