Job description
HireArt is helping Toyota Research Institute find a Robot Teacher to use imitation learning to show robots how to perform complex, dexterous tasks by piloting them using teleoperation tools such as joysticks, gamepads, virtual reality, and force-feedback devices.
In this role, you’ll be a key contributor in helping bring human-level intuition and creativity to how robots are trained and evaluated.

As a Robot Teacher, you will:
- Operate with a safety-first mindset when working with and around robotic systems.
- Teleoperate robots in a variety of scenarios to teach a wide range of tasks, including, but not limited to, physical teleoperation controllers of physical robots, VR headsets for real first-person control of physical robots or simulator robots, and 3rd-person-controlled computer simulations.
- Collaborate across teams to design, test, and improve robot skill curricula.
- Perform setup, calibration, and maintenance of robot workstations in lab and home-like environments.
- Communicate clearly with engineers and researchers to surface insights from the field.
- Travel up to 25% of the time to support off-site testing, evaluations, or data collection efforts.
- Lift and move robotic systems (up to 50 lbs) with care and awareness of safety.
- Maintain organized reports, experiment logs, and data tracking.
- Take initiative and adapt quickly to changing priorities or research focus.
Requirements
- Creative, curious, and detail-oriented, especially when evaluating physical systems
- Comfortable working with computers; prior knowledge of robotics or command-line tools is a bonus but not required
- Strong hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness; experience with video games, VR, or physical systems is a plus
- Willing to work across disciplines and learn from both technical and operational peers
- Dependable and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and proactively
